‘Mujhe Tum Nazar Se Gira To Rahe Ho’ by Mehdi Hassan is one of my favourite ghazals.
The first time I heard this gazal was a truly memorable moment. My father brought a collection of ghazal cassettes when he returned from Saudi Arabia in the 90s. As soon as Bapa played them, I was captivated—these ghazals touched my heart in a way nothing else had before. Ever since then, I found myself listening to this particular ghazal many times every day. Its melody and words seemed to echo my own emotions and life moments.
This ghazal stays with me because its lyrics resonate so deeply with my own experiences. There have been phases in my life where the words felt like my story—times of longing, loss, or reflection, all beautifully wrapped in Masroor Anwar’s heartfelt poetry.
For me, although ‘Mujhe Tum Nazar Se Gira To Rahe Ho’ has been sung by many artists, it is Mehdi Hassan’s voice that brings out its deepest emotions. His rendition makes the gazal even more beautiful and touching. The emotions he conveys remind me of my bapa, of my earliest memories with music, and of all the bittersweet moments this song has accompanied in my journey.
Every time I listen to it, I am reminded that music is not just a pastime for me—it’s a companion, a reflection, and a gentle touchstone for so many memories.
